Lucky Irish Bog Cat

Lucky Irish Bog Cat

THE IRISH BOG CAT

Legend tells that in ancient times the bogs of Ireland were inhabited by strange felines who wereunder the protection of St Brendan. These cats, it is said, arrived on the Emerald Isle with the *Sidhe, (shee) Their lush dark coats contained all the shades of turf, making them almost invisible in the bog land.

St Brendan took the finest of these cats on his voyages to present as gifts to the Lords of the lands he visited. The praises of these handsome cats and the luck that they brought to their owners was related far and wide by the bards. The Lucky Irish Bog Cat makes a great Irish gift for all occasions but especially for Halloween, St Patrick's Day, Weddings and birthdays.

*The Sidhe (shee) are considered to be a distinct race, quite separate from human beings yet who have had much contact with mortals over the centuries, and there are many documented testimonies to this. Belief in this race of beings who have powers beyond those of men to move quickly through the air and change their shape at will once played a huge part in the lives of people living in rural Ireland and Scotland

What is a Bog?

Ask anyone in Ireland and they would be able to give you some sort of answer. They would also probably be able to name most of the bogs in their locality.

However, their definition would certainly not include lakes, marshes, reed swamps, fens, callows and the like. The peat bogs of Ireland stretch from the Lakes of Killarney, clear up to Tullamore and beyond.

Turf or Peat?

Turf or Peat?

Peat The scientific definition of peat is partially decayed organic matter mainly of plant origin. In everyday language, peat - or turf as it is called in Ireland, is made up of the partly rotted remains of roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds and even tiny pollen grains and spores. Peat.

Turf It may be that there is some curative property in the peat. Stanislauf Topla, who first classified the peat-forming plant communities of the European peat lands, is convinced that peat contains bio-stimulators and even holds out a cure for cancer. In these enlightened days when even the multi-national drug companies are paying more than lip service to the claims of ethno-medicine, it would be a foolish shareholder who would write it all off as mere mumbo-jumbo. There's no fuel like an old fuel

The rising price of oil and gas is leading many people to turn away from its use for home heating; instead they are making increasing use of turf. West Donegal in particular has seen a significant increase in those cutting their own turf, particularly around the area between Loughanure and Dungloe. (Irish Culture & Customs Newsletter)
